ผู้สื่อสารคนหนึ่งมาเฝ้าดาวิด ทูลให้ทรงทราบว่า “ใจของคนอิสราเอลคล้อยตามอับซาโลมไปแล้ว”

แล้วดาวิดรับสั่งแก่บรรดาข้าราชการที่อยู่กับพระองค์ ณ เยรูซาเล็มว่า “จงลุกขึ้น ให้เราหนีไปเถอะ มิฉะนั้นเราจะไม่มีทางหนีจากอับซาโลม จงรีบไป เกรงว่าเขาจะรีบมาและตามเราทันและนำเหตุร้ายมาถึงเรา และทำลายกรุงนี้เสียด้วยคมดาบ”

ข้าราชการของพระราชาจึงกราบทูลพระราชาว่า “ดูเถิด บรรดาผู้รับใช้ของฝ่าพระบาทพร้อมจะทำตามสิ่งซึ่งพระราชาเจ้านายของข้าพระบาทตัดสินพระทัยทุกประการ”

พระราชาก็เสด็จออกไปพร้อมกับคนทั้งหมดในราชสำนักของพระองค์ เว้นแต่นางสนม 10 คน ได้ทรงละไว้ให้เฝ้าพระราชวัง

พระราชาก็เสด็จออกไป ทหารทั้งสิ้นก็ตามพระองค์ไป และเสด็จประทับที่บ้านที่ห่างไกลออกไป

บรรดาข้าราชการทั้งสิ้นเดินผ่านด้านข้างพระองค์ไป บรรดาคนเคเรธีและคนเปเลทกับคนกัท 600 คนที่ติดตามพระองค์มาจากเมืองกัท เดินผ่านนำหน้าพระราชาไป

พระราชาจึงตรัสสั่งอิททัยคนกัทว่า “ทำไมเจ้าจะไปกับพวกเราด้วย? จงกลับไปอยู่กับพระราชา เพราะเจ้าเป็นคนต่างด้าว และถูกเนรเทศมาด้วย เจ้าจงกลับไปบ้านเมืองของเจ้าเถิด

เจ้าเพิ่งมาถึงเมื่อวานนี้ และวันนี้ควรที่เราจะให้เจ้าไปๆ มาๆ กับพวกเราหรือ? ด้วยเราไม่ทราบว่าจะไปที่ไหน? จงกลับไปเถิด พาพวกพี่น้องของเจ้ากลับไปด้วย ขอความรักมั่นคงและความสัตย์จริงจงอยู่กับเจ้าเถิด”

แต่อิททัยทูลตอบพระราชาว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ทรงพระชนม์อยู่แน่ฉันใด และพระราชาเจ้านายของข้าพระบาททรงพระชนม์อยู่แน่ฉันใด พระราชาเจ้านายของข้าพระบาทเสด็จประทับที่ไหน จะสิ้นพระชนม์หรือทรงพระชนม์ ผู้รับใช้ของฝ่าพระบาทขอไปอยู่ที่นั้นด้วย”

ดาวิดก็รับสั่งกับอิททัยว่า “จงไปและเดินผ่านไปเถิด” อิททัยชาวเมืองกัทจึงผ่านไปพร้อมกับบรรดาผู้ใหญ่และเด็กทั้งหมด

เมื่อทหารทั้งหมดเดินผ่านไป ชาวเมืองทั้งหมดก็ร้องไห้เสียงดัง พระราชาก็เสด็จข้ามลำธารขิดโรน และทหารทั้งหมดก็เดินผ่านไปยังถิ่นทุรกันดาร

Then a messenger came to David and reported, “The men of Israel are loyal to Absalom!”

So David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come on! Let’s escape! Otherwise no one will be delivered from Absalom! Go immediately, or else he will quickly overtake us and bring disaster on us and kill the city’s residents with the sword.”

But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king is, whether dead or alive, there I will be as well!”

So David said to Ittai, “Come along then.” So Ittai the Gittite went along, accompanied by all his men and all the dependents who were with him.

All the land was weeping loudly as all these people were leaving. As the king was crossing over the Kidron Valley, all the people were leaving on the road that leads to the desert.
