โยอาบก็เป่าเขาสัตว์ และพวกทหารก็กลับจากการไล่ตามอิสราเอล เพราะโยอาบยับยั้งพวกเขาไว้

เขาก็ยกศพอับซาโลมโยนลงไปในบ่อใหญ่ซึ่งอยู่ในป่า เอาหินกองทับไว้เป็นกองใหญ่มหึมา คนอิสราเอลทั้งสิ้นต่างก็หนีกลับไปที่อยู่ของตน

เมื่ออับซาโลมยังมีชีวิตอยู่ ได้ตั้งเสาไว้สำหรับท่านที่หุบเขาหลวง เพราะท่านกล่าวว่า “เราไม่มีบุตรชายที่จะสืบชื่อของเรา” ท่านเรียกเสานั้นตามชื่อของท่าน เขาเรียกกันว่า อนุสรณ์อับซาโลม จนทุกวันนี้

อาหิมาอัสบุตรศาโดกกล่าวว่า “ขอให้ข้าพเจ้าวิ่งนำข่าวไปทูลพระราชาว่า พระยาห์เวห์ทรงช่วยกู้พระองค์ให้พ้นจากมือศัตรูของพระองค์แล้ว”

โยอาบก็ตอบเขาว่า “ท่านอย่าเป็นคนนำข่าวไปในวันนี้เลย ท่านจงนำข่าวในวันอื่นเถิด แต่วันนี้ท่านอย่านำข่าวเลย เพราะว่าโอรสของพระราชาสวรรคตแล้ว”

โยอาบก็สั่งชาวคูชคนหนึ่งว่า “จงไปทูลพระราชาให้ทรงทราบ ตามสิ่งที่ท่านได้เห็น” ชาวคูชคนนั้นก็ย่อตัวลงคำนับโยอาบ แล้วก็วิ่งไป

อาหิมาอัสบุตรศาโดกจึงเรียนโยอาบอีกว่า “จะอย่างไรก็ช่างเถิด ขอให้ข้าพเจ้าวิ่งตามชาวคูชคนนั้นไปด้วย” โยอาบตอบว่า “ลูกเอ๋ย เจ้าจะวิ่งไปทำไม? เพราะว่าการส่งข่าวนี้จะไม่มีรางวัลให้แก่เจ้า”

เขาตอบว่า “จะอย่างไรก็ช่างเถิด ข้าพเจ้าจะขอวิ่งไป” โยอาบจึงบอกเขาว่า “วิ่งไปเถอะ” และอาหิมาอัสก็วิ่งไปตามทางที่ราบ ขึ้นหน้าชาวคูชนั้นไป

Then Joab blew the trumpet and the army turned back from chasing Israel, for Joab had called for the army to halt.

They took Absalom, threw him into a large pit in the forest, and stacked a huge pile of stones over him. In the meantime all the Israelite soldiers fled to their homes.

Prior to this Absalom had set up a monument and dedicated it to himself in the King’s Valley, reasoning “I have no son who will carry on my name.” He named the monument after himself, and to this day it is known as Absalom’s Memorial.

Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me run and give the king the good news that the LORD has vindicated him before his enemies.”

But Joab said to him, “You will not be a bearer of good news today. You will bear good news some other day, but not today, for the king’s son is dead.”

Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go and tell the king what you have seen.” After bowing to Joab, the Cushite ran off.

Ahimaaz the son of Zadok again spoke to Joab, “Whatever happens, let me go after the Cushite.” But Joab said, “Why is it that you want to go, my son? You have no good news that will bring you a reward.”

But he said, “Whatever happens, I want to go!” So Joab said to him, “Then go!” So Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Jordan plain, and he passed the Cushite.
